SENIOR CHRISTMAS PARTY ON DEC 19TH
The last event before Christmas was the Senior Mixed Christmas Party on Friday December 19th. Jim Lyons organized 2 draws of curling, followed by a supper in the lounge. While the numbers were down about 15 from last year, the 41 that did participate, had a very good time.

DOMINION CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Dominion Club Championship

The Manitoba Curling Association is pleased to announce that they have come to agreement with the Dominion Insurance Company to host a Dominion Club Championship in the province of Manitoba. The Dominion Club Championship is a program introduced by the Dominion Insurance Company to help fill the gap between grassroots club curlers and those elite curlers who garner so much of the attention in the curling world.
The winners of the Manitoba Dominion Club Championship will go on to represent Manitoba in the National Championships to be held the last week of November, 2009 in Etobicoke, Ontario. The 8 team men’s and 8 team women’s provincial championship will take place from April 24-26, 2009 at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg. The provincial championships will take place immediately after the Winnipeg Club Championship which will also take place at the AMCC. Representatives at the Provincial Championship will be selected with one male and one female representative coming from each provincial sport region. The eighth team will come from the host region. The host region this year will be Winnipeg.
Representatives will be selected from each region through a regional playdowns that will take place throughout February, March and early April. The seven sport regions in Manitoba are Norman, Parkland, Westman, Central, Interlake, Eastman and Winnipeg.
“We are very excited about this opportunity for Manitoba curlers. For too long there has been a missing link for the everyday club curler to compete and have the opportunity move onward and represent Manitoba. We feel that this will not only help to draw new curlers into a more competitive environment but draw curlers who had moved away from serious competition and participation in the Safeway and Scotties qualifying process back into competitive curling. “ commented Shane Ray, Executive Director of the MCA.
To date more than 20 Manitoba curling clubs have declared the intent to participate in the regional play downs. Clubs have until mid January to declare their intent to participate in the regional playdowns.
In the intent of making the Championship for everyday curlers, the Dominion has set the eligibility as follows.
Each team will be allowed only one player who has played in a Men’s, Women’s or Seniors’ provincial event in the current or previous year, or participated in a Grand Slam event in the current or previous year. A maximum of 2 replacement players from the club can play any position except skip, but cannot play any position higher than the position being filled. Each team will be allowed a maximum of 2 players under the age of 20, as of December 31st of the year prior to the championship (minimum age of 15 as of December 31st).

William Lyburn defeated brother Allan Lyburn in the final of the Brandon Mens Bonspiel, and wins a berth into the Safeway Select. Final score was 7 to 4. Of note, Debbie's McLellan's nephew, Geordie Hargraves, plays third for Willie.

WESTOBA CREDIT UNION MASTERS SUPER LEAGUE
Both Virden teams were in action again on Wednesday afternoon in Brandon, as the league nears the end.
Murray Duncan and his squad, improved their record to 7 and 5, good for 5th place in the 14 team Money Masters Group. Duncan beat Steen 8 to 7.
Terry Hayward and his Virden team dropped a close match 6 to 5 to Sadler. The loss dropped Hayward to 9 and 3 and in sole possession of 3rd spot in the 14 team Rock Solid Group. Rollie McKoy lost his second straight game to drop to 10 and 2 and a two way tie for first, with Van Daele.
Next week will mark the last game of the regular season for the Super League. Only two teams in each group will make the playoffs.

Last year, Brandon’s Allan Lyburn beat his brother William in seven ends in a Brandon Sun Westman Super League of Curling game just before the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel and went on to claim the event’s Safeway Championship berth a few days later.
Twelve months later, the same scenario is shaping up after Allan earned a key 8-4 win over William in Wednesday night’s Super League action at the Brandon Curling Club.
“Hopefully that’s a lucky omen,” Allan Lyburn said. “We’ve been having a good season and have been playing well and enjoy playing together so hopefully we can have a good run this weekend (at the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel).”
After William’s deuce and stolen single to take a 3-1 lead, Allan gained control for good with a four-ender for a 5-3 lead.
“We weren’t playing all that badly,” Allan Lyburn said. “We were putting a little pressure on them and after that we put rocks in the right spot and put William in a tough spot in the fourth when we scored four and he was chasing us the rest of the game.”
Allan Lyburn (8-2) added a three-ender in the seventh end to put the game on ice and keep his share of first place in the league, while William Lyburn dropped to 6-4 and now shares third place with three other teams.
In other games last night, Jerry Chudley of Neepawa clipped Rob Van Kommer of Carberry 7-6, Kelly Marnoch of Carberry beat Terry McNamee of Brandon 8-6, Lisa Blixhavn of Brandon needed an extra end to beat Blair Goethals of Deloraine 6-5, Graham Freeman of Virden slid past Ken Lawn of Hamiota 5-2 and Brandon’s Kelly Skinner edged Kelly Robertson of Neepawa 9-8.

Just before leaving for the Canada Cup qualifier in Edmonton, Marnoch (3-7) scored a game-ending three-ender in the eighth end to earn the win. McNamee’s team (6-4) managed two steals, a single and a deuce with Barry Rabe skipping in place of McNamee.

Blixhavn, fresh off of a Scotties Zone 4 victory, needed an extra end to hold off Goethals to improve to 4-6. Goethals dropped to 2-8.
Freeman 5 Lawn 2
Freeman (5-5) needed a win to keep his playoff chances alive and got it with a couple of single-point steals. He can now force a tie-breaker with a win next week over McNamee. Lawn fell to 1-9.
Chudley 7 Van Kommer 6
Both teams scored singles and deuces with the hammer, but Chudley’s three-ender in the second end proved more vital than it seemed at the time. Chudley now shares third place with a 6-4 record, while Van Kommer (5-5) needs a win and some help to force a tie-breaker game.

The Southwest Trilight Ladies league had their final draw of the year and their Christmas party too. This the 30th year of this 8 team league,with teams from all over south western Manitoba. There were co - winners this year.

VIRDEN JUNIOR HIGH CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Virden Junior High teachers started their Christmas party on Saturday at the Virden Curling club. Don Naha organized a mini curling bonspiel. The teachers started the afternoon in the Lounge and then down to the ice and then back to the Lounge. Then the teachers moved over to the Virden Legion to have a great supper catered by Thelma Quinn.

MCA Announces Club Profits from the
2008 Tim Hortons Brier Quote Your Code Program
The Quote your Code program, a profit sharing program between the 2008 Tim Hortons Brier and the Manitoba Curling Association saw 87 of Manitoba’s 130 curling clubs have their code quoted when fans were purchasing Brier tickets. A percentage of profits from the Brier have been designated to each participating club.
The 2008 Tim Hortons Brier Quote your Code program raised a grand total of $336,042.56 in ticket sales. A total of $78,575.46 is being donated to the 87 Manitoba Curling Clubs who participated in the program. The Granite Curling Club was the top earner with $27,324.32 in ticket sales raised for a profit of $6,389.13. The Carberry Curling Club was the top rural earner with $20,776.00 in ticket sales raised for a profit of $4,599.76.
Total event profit was $449,002.62; this number means that the host will receive 35% of the amount or $157,150.92. One half or $78,575.46 is divided up to the participating clubs of the Quote Your Code Program. The other half goes to the Manitoba Curling Association under the mandate to promote the game of curling in the province of Manitoba; to unite all curling clubs within Manitoba into one organization; to organize recreational and competitive curling competitions; to establish and govern the rules and regulations for competitions within the province; to encourage fraternal relationships with other curling associations; and to maintain affiliations with the National Curling Association.
The MCA also receives $29,185.17, which is a 10% share of the CCA’s profits. The Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame raised $78,199.94 from Brier 50/50 ticket sales. In total over $260,000.00 will be put towards the development of curling in Manitoba. In addition the Schmirler Foundation provided $32,000 to the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The economic impact was in excess of $20 million to Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba.
The Quote Your Code Program will again be used in 2009 in partnership with the BDO Canadian Open Classic being held in Winnipeg this January. 10% of ticket sales will go to participating clubs through the Quote Your Code Program.

TOWN OF VIRDEN CHRISTMAS PARTY
Friday night, Dec 5th, the Town of Virden had their Christmas Party at the Virden Curling Club. Close to 70 Town employees and representatives enjoyed a great meal, catered by Thelma Quinn and then had some fun, playing a number of unique games on the ice. Kim Stuart, the town confidential secretary and curling club member, did a great job organizing the event.
The curling club would like to thank Kim, Rhonda,Bruce and the Town for considering to have their party in our rink. Events like this really help our club.

WESTMAN SUPER LEAGUE
Allan Lyburn and Kelly Skinner stayed in a tie for 1st place in the 12 team league. Lyburn won 6 - 3 and Skinner beat Graham Freeman 5 - 2. Both teams are now 7 and 2.

Terry Hayward's team from Virden took one more step toward a playoff berth in the 14 team division. He beat previously unbeaten Rollie McKay 7 to 4 to stay in a second place tie with Van Daele of Souris at 9 wins and 2 losses. McKay is now 10 and 1, with only 2 weeks left. The top two teams from each of the 2 - 14 team divisions make the playoffs. Haywards team, includes Bruce Sawyer, and Geordie and Bill Barkley. Marcel Chacun, spared for Sawyer on Wednesday.
